extracting information from lines, put them into arrays

I need a little help writing this small perl script. I'm trying to extract the values from each line in a file and find the average for example
cat school
I tried using this script to test if the array would take the values but it didnt.
I was wondering if I could get some helpful answers thanks!

DESCRIPTION
Note that this comparison is case sensitive, and unlike strcmp(3) this function is not binary safe.
strcoll(3) uses the current locale for doing the comparisons. If the current locale is C or POSIX, this function is equivalent to str-
cmp(3).
PARAMETERS
o $str1
- The first string.
o $str2
- The second string.
RETURN VALUES
Returns < 0 if $str1 is less than $str2; > 0 if $str1 is greater than $str2, and 0 if they are equal.
