but the main question is how the backup can be completed while at the same time it is in the status "running"?

I believe you will find that NIM not only builds the mksysb but then performs a SPOT build from the mksysb and then performs an allocation to put the new mksysb and spot into the resource database. I am not sure whether the savevg does the same as you would not want to rebuild the system using the savevg data. That is why you receive the "Completed successfully" message as the mksysb has finished but the NIM stuff has not.

I will not be offended if someone contradicts this. I am pretty certain I am correct and as such the word "Patience" is called for, let the job finish.
