I have a directory of files DATA1,DATA2,DATA3, etc... each file has 1 column of data
Example:
File DATA1
name
date
time
time requested

I need to change these to CSV files so I can import the data. I believe AWK is what i need but I'm new to AWK and can't seem to get the... (5 Replies)
Hello!
I am writing a program to run through two large lists of data (~300,000 rows), find where rows in one file match another, and combine them based on matching fields. Due to the large file sizes, I'm guessing AWK will be the most efficient way to do this. Overall, the input and output I'm... (5 Replies)

grep -v will exclude matching lines, but I want something that will print all lines but exclude a matching field. The pattern that I want excluded is '/mnt/svn'
If there is a better solution than awk I am happy to hear about it, but I would like to see this done in awk as well. I know I can... (11 Replies)
Hi,
I wasn't quite sure how to title this one! Here goes:
I have some already partially parsed log files, which I now need to extract info from. Because of the way they are originally and the fact they have been partially processed already, I can't make any assumptions on the number of... (8 Replies)
Dear AWK-experts!
I did get stuck in the task of combining files after matching fields, so I'm still awkward with learning AWK.
There are 2 files: one containing 3 columns with ID, coding status, and score for long noncoding RNAs:
file1 (1.txt) (>5000 lines)

Hi,
I have 2 tab-delimited input files as follows.
file1.tab:
green A apple
red B apple
file2.tab:

Return $1 of file1 if,
. $1 of file2 matches $3 of file1 and,
. any single element (separated by ";") in $3 of file2 is present in $2 of file1

Hello all, I am having trouble with what should be an easy task, but seem to be missing something fundamental. I have two files, with File 1 consisting of a single field of many thousands of records. I also have File 2 with two fields and many thousands of records.
My goal is that when $1 of... (2 Replies)

split
SPLIT(1) BSD General Commands Manual SPLIT(1)NAME
split -- split a file into pieces
SYNOPSIS
split [-a suffix_length] [-b byte_count[k|m]] [-l line_count] [-p pattern] [file [name]]
DESCRIPTION
The split utility reads the given file and breaks it up into files of 1000 lines each. If file is a single dash ('-') or absent, split reads
from the standard input.
The options are as follows:
-a suffix_length
Use suffix_length letters to form the suffix of the file name.
-b byte_count[k|m]
Create smaller files byte_count bytes in length. If ``k'' is appended to the number, the file is split into byte_count kilobyte
pieces. If ``m'' is appended to the number, the file is split into byte_count megabyte pieces.
-l line_count
Create smaller files n lines in length.
-p pattern
The file is split whenever an input line matches pattern, which is interpreted as an extended regular expression. The matching line
will be the first line of the next output file. This option is incompatible with the -b and -l options.
If additional arguments are specified, the first is used as the name of the input file which is to be split. If a second additional argument
is specified, it is used as a prefix for the names of the files into which the file is split. In this case, each file into which the file is
split is named by the prefix followed by a lexically ordered suffix using suffix_length characters in the range ``a-z''. If -a is not speci-
fied, two letters are used as the suffix.
If the name argument is not specified, the file is split into lexically ordered files named with the prefix ``x'' and with suffixes as above.
ENVIRONMENT
The LANG, LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE and LC_COLLATE environment variables affect the execution of split as described in environ(7).
EXIT STATUS
The split utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs.
SEE ALSO csplit(1), re_format(7)STANDARDS
The split utility conforms to IEEE Std 1003.1-2001 (``POSIX.1'').
HISTORY
A split command appeared in Version 3 AT&T UNIX.
BUGS
The maximum line length for matching patterns is 65536.
