i'm trying to set up my internet connection and i was told i need to edit the file

I just started computer science at UW Milwaukee. When I access the university Solaris system from PuTTY, I get permission denied when I try to access the file I wrote. Now I really have no idea what I'm doing, I just don't understand why I get permission denied in my won directory. Thank You

Hi,
I can not execute a .env file
$ . /Data/oracle/d03/mydbora/8.0.6/MYDB.env
-bash: /Data/oracle/d03/mydbora/8.0.6/MYDB.env: Permission denied
Even if :
-rwxrwxrwx 1 oracle dba 2903 Mar 5 2007 /Data/oracle/d03/mydbora/8.0.6/MYDB.env

I'll start off by saying that I know very little about Unix - however, I do know that I have a .profile file in my home directory, and that I should be able to invoke it by typing . profile. I would like to copy data from local mechine to cluster. Basically, I typed
scp -r DVD/ acount@cluster:/
it shows Permission denied.

I created a user so that when he logs in he will be directed to a menu

Trying to get date into the txt file.

chdir, fchdir - change working directory
SYNOPSIS DESCRIPTION
and cause a directory pointed to by path or fildes to become the current working directory, the starting point for path searches of path
names not beginning with path points to the path name of a directory. fildes is an open file descriptor of a directory.
For a directory to become the current working directory, a process must have execute (search) access to the directory.
RETURN VALUE
Upon successful completion, a value of 0 is returned. Otherwise, a value of -1 is returned and is set to indicate the error.
ERRORS
fails and the current working directory remains unchanged if one or more of the following are true:
A component of the path name is not a directory.
The named directory does not exist.
Search permission is denied for any component of the path name.
path points outside the allocated address space of the process. The reliable detection of this error is implemen-
tation dependent.
path is null.
The length of the specified path name exceeds
bytes, or the length of a component of the path name exceeds bytes while is in effect.
Too many symbolic links were encountered in translating the path name.
