One way to solve this problem is to go to
www.redhat.com and search for the hardware compartable list. There is a list with all the modems Linux 7.3 supports.
I checked this list before building a test workstation for Linux 7.3 and the OS simply configured herself.

I have got myself a new hard disk- a 80 GB SATA IDE from Seagate. When I try installing Red Hat Linux 9(and RHL 7.2 too), it displays an error message saying that it fails to detect any hard drive.
