Backup Exec agent won't start... PLEASE HELP!
Backup Exec Agent won't start....
Question: Has anyone had any previous experience working with Backup exec for Unix? I'm running SCO Openserver 5.0.5 and Backup Exec agent Version 5.01 Revision 5.032 Basically, these are the commands I'm issueing and here is the output.
# cd etc
# cd bkupexec
# ./agent.be
Backup Exec -- Unix Agent, Version 5.01 Revision 5.032

Unable to get host address for NWAPPS1
NRLInit: net/service address not found for NWAPPS1/grfs
FindAdvertisementReceivers failed
./agent.be: Communication System Failure:
NRL initialization failed.
Now, I have absolutely no idea why this is happening. I have the proper entry in my /etc/services file for the port/service that the server needs. it appears (without quotations) as "grfs 6101/tcp # Backup Exec Agent"
There is also an entry within my etc/hosts file for NWAPPS1 (my backup exec server) and I can ping that box using either the name (NWAPPS1) or the ip addy (in this case, 10.1.0.1) The strangest thing is that I have another box named MICROS1 that has the exact same config file as the box I'm having problems with, and it works fine (the only difference in the two is the name of the server that the backup exec agent is announcing to, NWAPPS1 vs. MICROS1)
Here is my config file (agent.cfg):

tell NWAPPS1
tell_interval 30
exclude_dir /dev
exclude_dir /var/spool/lp/FIFOS
If anyone can help with any suggestions on why the agent won't start or any ideas as to how to troubleshoot the problem, I'd really appreciate it. I also have the output of the errlog file as it apprears when I try to launch the program in debug mode here:

Does anyone know how to run " ./agent.be & " in the background? I need to keep it running so that Backup Exec can see it. When I log out as root is shuts down the agent. This just started happening after I upgraded my Veritas drivers on my Windows 2000 server. That is my backup server.

After I log ino the machine, a window pops up indicating that I should check that the HOSTNAME is the same in these three files
/etc//rc.configd/netconf
/etc/hosts
/var/adm/inetd.sec
How do I change the hostname in these files?

Hello,
When launching a recently installed UNIX agent for my Veritas backup exec server I receive "getservbyname (grfs, tcp) failed!"
I have checked to make sure the service exists under port 6101 and its there. I also removed and recreated the service but still no go. :confused: :confused:... (2 Replies)

I have 3 SCO 5.0.5 machines. Two are running the /etc/bkupexec/agent.be just fine but the 3rd fails with a NRL initialization error. It can't seem to find the backup server in the /etc/hosts file.
The entry is in the /etc/hosts file.

backup_listhosts - Lists Tape Coordinators registered in the Backup Database SYNOPSIS
backup listhosts [-localauth] [-cell <cell name>] [-help] backup listh [-l] [-c <cell name>] [-h] DESCRIPTION
The backup listhosts command displays the Backup Database record of the port offset numbers defined for Tape Coordinator machines. A Tape Coordinator must have an entry in the list to be available for backup operations. The existence of an entry does not necessarily indicate that the Tape Coordinator process (butc) is currently running at that port offset. To check, issue the backup status command. OPTIONS
-localauth Constructs a server ticket using a key from the local /etc/openafs/server/KeyFile file. The backup command interpreter presents it to the Backup Server, Volume Server and VL Server during mutual authentication. Do not combine this flag with the -cell argument. For more details, see backup(8). -cell <cell name> Names the cell in which to run the command. Do not combine this argument with the -localauth flag. For more details, see backup(8). -help Prints the online help for this command. All other valid options are ignored. OUTPUT
After a "Tape hosts:" header, the output reports two things about each Tape Coordinator currently defined in the Backup Database: o The hostname of the machine housing the Tape Coordinator. The format of this name depends on the hostname format used when the backup addhost command was issued. o The Tape Coordinator's port offset number. The Tape Coordinators appear in the order in which they were added to the Backup Database. EXAMPLES
The following example shows the result of the command in the ABC Corporation cell: % backup listhosts Tape hosts: Host backup1.abc.com, port offset 0 Host backup1.abc.com, port offset 1 Host backup3.abc.com, port offset 4 Host backup2.abc.com, port offset 3 PRIVILEGE REQUIRED
