It faster to use the shell, if you have bash or ksh available to you:

#!/usr/bin/ksh
while read item; do
case $item in
*kg) : ;;
*) print $item ;;
esac
done < your_file >output_file

It can be done any number of ways via the shell - that is just one way.
That is also assuming that the "20kg" is either on a line by itself or at the end...

You could also do:

sed "s/.*kb$//g" your_file > output_file

NAME

       suspend - shell built-in function to halt the current shell

SYNOPSIS

   sh
       suspend

   csh
       suspend

   ksh
       suspend

DESCRIPTION

   sh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).

   csh
       Stop the shell in its tracks, much as if it had been sent a stop signal with ^Z. This is most often used to stop shells started by su.

   ksh
       Stops the execution of the current shell (but not if it is the login shell).
