Just bought a domain name ... what to do next?

Hi,

I usually post in the UNIX general forum for help on codes and commands but today I decided to post in this forum since my question may be relevant. So I am really new to the webpage/http area so please be patient with this question.

Basically I got a domain name from godaddy.com but I have no clue what to do next. I know that I need to purchase a package for a host to run the webpage but is it also possible to use my own server as a host?

What else do I need to get started?

thanks

Phil

Go purchase a small slice at slicehost.com and use it to install a web server, then install some apps like Wordpress or something else and do some coding for fun.

If you want to do it all yourself, you will need:
An internet connection with a static IP. Where I live, this adds $50 to the $35 a month for a typical dynamic IP DSL connection.
A cheap computer with Linux installed with the server packages.
A router that does network address translation so that only ports 80 (http) and 22 (ssh, sftp) are open.

Better to start off with Slicehost, $20 a month:

Slicehost - VPS Hosting

Or, perhaps Linode, about the same money, but more bang for the buck:

Linode - Xen VPS Hosting

I refer Slicehost, but others like Linode better.

We use Slicehost for one of our servers and have been very pleased with it. We tried Linode and was disappointed, but it was perhaps my fault as I'm very impatient with services and expect them to work nearly flawless with perfect support. Slicehost has great support as well, so we are pleased with them. I really like their chatroom support. If you have questions about their setup and prices, go there.

I do not recommend free hosting a new domain with someone like Godaddy where you don't have root and ssh access to the shell, and you don't have direct access to the database.

That is why I recommend users with a new domain and what to move forward go with a solid VPS provider who can easily add CPU power and RAM if your project is successful.
