If you want to do it all yourself, you will need:
An internet connection with a static IP. Where I live, this adds $50 to the $35 a month for a typical dynamic IP DSL connection.
A cheap computer with Linux installed with the server packages.
A router that does network address translation so that only ports 80 (http) and 22 (ssh, sftp) are open.
