UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I wrote the following script to remove the ^Ms from a group of files but it hangs on the sed. The awk script just takes the ls output and makes it one long line. I've chmoded all of the files to 777 and I'm running Solaris. Thanks

ls > workfile
for file in `awk -f ../bin/LF_make_one_line.awk workfile`;
do
sed -e's/\^M//g' > tmp
mv tmp $file
done

Have you looked into using the command dos2unix ? That will do it for you.

When you put the ^M in your sed command from your original script, did you type ^ and them M? This is not the same as ^M. To get a ^M, type ctrl+v+m. Other then that I think your original script should work assuming your LF_make_one_line.awk does what is should.

gillbates, i think the reason it appeared to be hanging up is that your sed command didn't know what it was supposed to be looking at .. you didn't specify a file for it to replace the characters in.

try this:

sed -e 's/\^M//g' $file > tmp
mv tmp $file
