UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi all,

I have user called "Z". The home directory is /home/Z. I have another directory /home/Z/OP. Within /home/Z/OP, i have 2 directories
/home/Z/OP/OP1 and /home/Z/OP2.

I want to restrict access for Z to only access
/home/Z/OP and
/home/Z/OP1 and
/home/Z/OP2.

What kind of permission should i set for the various directories? I also want user Z to be in the /home/Z/OP directory the moment he logs in, and he cannot go /home/OP. This sound a little weird, purpose being Z is only a normal user, and I do not even want to let him see the hidden files in his home directory.

1.I reckon I can include a 'cd /home/Z/OP' command in the .bash_profile script to direct him to the /home/Z/OP directory. Is this correct?
2.But how can I restrict access to only the 3 directories above ?

What U consider is a dirty workaround. if a user may not see files in his home directory he is not able to use them so the files are useless. you could quite as well delete them. Restricting access to users home directories will cause severe problems with the account. don't do it !

maybe you will search the internet for chroot shell or restriced shell so see if those technics are solving your problems

why dont you set /home/Z/op directory as the home directory for the user Z

keep the owner of /home/Z directory as root or bin .. or some other user not giving permissions to Z to access that dir.. also keep Z owner of OP1 and OP@ directory ..

that should solve your concerns ..

it will not help to change the home dir bcs the "secret" hidden files have to be in place
