Try using fixed strings rather than regular expressions -
Code:
 grep -F '<VENDORASN />' my_inputfile

Hammer & Screwdriver Is this what you mean?

Code:
> cat file288
<VENDORASN /> Leandro
<VEND /> Not here
ASN /> Not this lien either
<VENDORASN /> found a second instance
end

> cat file288 | grep "<VENDORASN />"
<VENDORASN /> Leandro
<VENDORASN /> found a second instance

echo "Files that will be transfer: " $1
done

Hammer & Screwdriver OK, here goes

Code:
> for filename in `grep "file1" ~/tmp/exec_from_file/* | cut -d":" -f1 | sort -u` ; do echo $filename; done
/home/xxx/tmp/exec_from_file/calc_file10
/home/xxx/tmp/exec_from_file/proc_100

The above lists out files in a particular directory that have "file1" in them.

The command ould be on several lines:
Code:
for filename in `grep "file1" ~/tmp/exec_from_file/* | cut -d":" -f1 | sort -u`
  do
  echo $filename
done

And, perhaps instead of echo'ing the $filename variable, you could do anythig with it.

Excellent...

Can I do also something like:

Quote:
for filename in `grep "file1" ~/tmp/exec_from_file/* | cut -d":" -f1 | sort -u`
do
if [ "grep is true" ]
echo grep is true
else
echo grep is false
fi
echo $filename
done
to show a message when the option in the grep statement is true?

Thanks in advanced.

Hammer & Screwdriver Kind of possible

The following will give any/all filenames that are successful:
Code:
for filename in `grep "file1" ~/tmp/exec_from_file/* | cut -d":" -f1 | sort -u`
  do
  echo $filename
done

You could instead:
Code:
for filename in `grep "file1" ~/tmp/exec_from_file/* | cut -d":" -f1 | sort -u`
  do
  echo $filename
  match_file=1
done
if [ $match_file -eq 1 ]
  then
  echo "Matches were found"
fi

Or, if you only wanted to see if there were files, you could have changed the for-do---done command to merely check for success.

Suggest you experiment a little with these commands to understand what I am showing.
