Shell script method...

sdilucca - Just a couple of quick questions:

Do you know what a shell script is & how to write one?
Do you understand the difference between a shell script and a function in UNIX?

It's just that I don't think you need a function to do what you want; sounds like you need a shell script. Here's a a quick way to write the script you need:
Code:
$ echo $PATH | What directories are in your PATH?
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/opt/gcc.3.3/bin:/usr/contrib/bin: [ETC] | ...you will need to put your script in one of them.
$ cd /usr/local/bin                                                                   | Lets put it in /usr/local/bin
$ cat > last50 | Quick way to make a file or script
tail -n 50 < /var/traffic_log.log | Here's the command you need in the script; change path to location of YOUR logfile
^D | Press CTRL_D to save the file
$ chmod 777 last50 | Make the last50 file executable, so you can run it as a script
$ last50                                                                              | Run the script!
/usr/local/bin/last50[1]: cannot open /var/traffic_log.log: No such file or directory | Well I don't have that log-file, therefore got error.
