Question Wiping UNIX Hard Drive

Hello all, Maybe someone can help? Please?!?!?

How do I wipe a UNIX hard drive, For dos I use Norton. Is there something like that for UNIX. I am just barley understanding UNIX, so please forgive my ignorance. Also, is there a government approved method of sanitization?

Thanks

Are you wanting to continue using this drive for Unix or for Windows?

Does it matter?

It will probably just be put into storage, and at some time tossed in the trash.

Yes.

If you want to use it for Windows you will need to run fdisk select non-dos partitions and delete and re-create partitions to be formatted for FAT, NTFS, etc.

If you are going to use it for Unix, then run your Unix's flavor of fdisk and delete partitions and re-create for `makefs`.

If you are just wanting to delete sensitive data, then you want to do a low-level format. You can most likely download a LLF tool from your drive's vendor website.

According to the Clearing and Sanitization Matrix, the only approved method of sanitizing a hard drive with non-removable media that contains top secret data is to use an approved destruction technique. You have your choice...the approved types of destruction are: disintegrate, incinerate, pulverize, or melt.
