in this context:
/usr/bin/perl $somedir/somescript.pl && \

Consider the following:

command1 && command2

If command1 has an exit status of zero (success), the shell will run command2.

On the flip side:

command1 || command2

The shell will only run command2 if command1 has a non-zero (failure) exit status.

Looks like you may be missing command2...

so basically --

command 1 && \
command 2

basically means the same as "command 1 && command 2"?

Yes. The "\" acts as an escape character, taking the speacial meaning out of newline (what you get when you hit [Enter]). As long as [Enter] comes directly after the "\", it may as well be on the same line.

It makes for more readable code in scripts, since you don't have to have a command with a lot of options all one one line...

i know that in bash && is the same as if [ something ]; then command, and if ;; then if [ something ]; else command
but i mnot quite sure.
