He's referring to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, which contains a local mapping of IP addresses to host names. Normally you would use a DNS server to store this mapping, but this file gives you the facility to override it, or add mappings that do not exist on your DNS server.

If you don't know the IP address or the name of the host you are connecting to it's a moot point, because you won't know what to put in this file.

Help! How to find the local host after few ssh hops to remote host???

QNX host cannot ping SCO host, vice versa
