PHP file access log

hi, i would like to know if there is a way to record o view a specific file access history. What i want to do is get information about what process or application has changed a text file for example.

thanks in advance

Are you referring to a wtmpux file? or syslog ?

well, syslog would be useful, but maybe there is another way to get what i want. Let me explain what i need this for:

i changed a line in passwd file, saved and verified that the change is still there, then i logout but when i come back and login, the change that i made is not there anymore. so ai guess that a service, or program is restoring this file maybe. so i was wondering if there is a way to know who or what modified a file.
