Hi.

The version of paste may vary, this works for me:
Code:
#!/bin/bash -

# @(#) s1 Demonstrate paste with null string delimiter.

echo
echo "(Versions displayed with local utility \"version\")"
version >/dev/null 2>&1 && version =o $(_eat $0 $1) paste
echo

echo "123abc" >data1
echo "123 abc" >data2

echo " paste with null string delimiter:"
paste -d "" data1 data2

exit 0

Producing:
Code:
% ./s1

(Versions displayed with local utility "version")
Linux 2.6.11-x1
GNU bash 2.05b.0
paste (coreutils) 5.2.1

 paste with null string delimiter:
123abc123 abc

The paste with \0 produced:
Code:
123abc0123 abc

with my paste.

I noticed on Solaris that my script fails with error message:
Code:
paste: no delimiters

but using
Code:
paste -d '\0' data1 data2

seemed to work (note the quotes) ... cheers, drl

Hi.

I see that in the man page, the Solaris paste makes a special case for delimiter "\0":
Code:
\0 Empty string (not a null character) ...

My experience is that one must use quotes around the 2 characters, otherwise most shells will strip the backslash, leaving the bare 0, which paste then uses as the delimiter.

The quoted \0 also works with Linux paste, but does not seem to be documented in either the man or info pages ... cheers, drl

i am on AIX5.3

paste -d "\0" - worked fine.

paste -d \0 - will replace 0 with a single space.

again, thank you all.
