because there are a lot of files with more than one dot in the file name.

This works gr8 but only single extension.
Alas... not the case with filenames having multiple dots (.)

this can work with files having multiple dots "."

ls *.oldext | sed -e 's/^\(.*\)\.oldext$/\1\.oldext \1\.newext/g' | xargs -n 2 mv -f

Also got tired trimming file extensions so wrote this and keep it in my bin directory as a shell script called filestem.

for i in $@
echo "$i" | sed 's/\.[^/]*$//'

This will however trim all the extensions out of a filename.
