Question FreeBSD 4.4 Uninstalling KDE or GNOME

Hey all Smilie

I finally got around to installing FreeBSD 4.4, which considering it's my first attempt with *nix, didn't go too badly. I've managed to configure X and everything else, but I've got a bit of a problem, lol.

I installed KDE and GNOME. I had a rough idea as to what they were, but I didn't realise they could conflict with each other. I thought they were 2 separate Window Managers, and it seems that's not the case.

Now, whenever I run either of them, I get lots of segmentation faults; I really do mean lots. Smilie

So, my question is this; How do I remove either of them? I tried going through /stand/sysinstall, but there's no uninstall option. I've been to the FreeBSD cheat sheet sites etc. and to be honest, I feel like I'm a little bit over my head lol.

Could anyone give me a hand with this please?

Thanks in advance,

hellz.

go to /usr/ports/ <-- and go to the map of your X system
like kde or gnome

than do make deinstall

don't forget to change your startup file.

If you're getting a lot of segmentation faults, it may be more than the WMs... KDE and Gnome should not affect each other, since only one should be running at any given time.
I have had a serious problem in the past with random jobs seg-faulting that was caused by faulty memory. I wasn't affected that much by using the command line (lynx, slrn, mail, etc...), but opening X would use a sufficient amount of my memory to hit the dodgy chip...

How old is this machine?

Thanks for the replies Smilie

As for your question, my computer is only a 8 months old. Spec:

P4 1.7ghz
256mb RDRAM
4x DVD
12x CD-RW
19" monitor
64mb nVidia GeForce 3 DDR
Win2k
Intellimouse
102 Keyboard etc.
Lucent WinModem

Mmmm, that's reminded me... I know there are Linux drivers for Lucent modems, but does anyone know if that extends to Unix as well? I'd like to be able to use that modem to connect to the Internet if possible. If not, then I'll just get another. Smilie

Again, thanks for the replies. Smilie

Have you tried checking the memory with a third party memory checking program?

What about BIOS upgrade?

I had a problem with my El Cheapo Soyobox rebooting and it was fixed with a BIOS Flash.
