Question FreeBSD - DNS messages

Good morning/afternoon/evening all!

I often get the following line in my /var/log/messages file:
Mar 27 07:01:33 gateway named[180]: denied update from [192.168.1.1].1261 for "mydomain.net" IN

I have FreeBSD 4.4 and have a DNS server running which seems to work fine except for this message.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Looks like a file permission problem rejecting the DNS Forwarding from your DNS Server.

Check your
/etc/namedb/named.conf what is the file permission for tha file.
Also check that correct IP adress have been configured on that particular file (192.168.1.1) Also check your /etc/namedb/localhost.rev for file permission.

If you still cant figure out your problem check this link
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...dbook/dns.html.
Post back if any of the suggested doesnt work. Maybe others have some idea about this.

This is difficult stuff to grasp. Setting up a DNS server using a "howto" which I plucked from the internet is one thing, but understanding what is exactly going on is QUITE something else. I think that is where my problem lies.

As for the file permissions, they were all set bind:bind with named running under bind:bind also. I did change the machine name in the zone files for 192.168.1.1 as they did not match the hostname of the machine itself.

;Machine names
localhost IN A 127.0.0.1
ns IN A 192.168.1.1

the machine name is "gateway" and not "ns", so I guess that was the reason for the error message.

I think reading that O'Reilly book might be the best way to getting a more profound knowledge of DNS servers.

Again, thankx for the input.

A good site for FAQs and you can ask questions to the folks that make bind (just don't ask questions without going through the FAQs first - and the response may be to buy the book).
