excluding directories while using tar

How do I exclude some directories while creating a tar file with a number of directories?

Use the exclude option (X on Solaris ) or use the include option on HP-UX to pick the ones you want in the tar file (include will also work on Solaris). Check the man page for your OS (you didn't post it).
