When I run the following command in the shell it works fine. It prints a city name and then a path for a file.
~$ for i in `awk -F':' '{print $0}' /home/knoppix/Desktop/data/subs | grep -m 1 $ city | sed "s/:/ /"`

I know there are caveats about using read in pipelines because read is treated by a subshell. I know this but I can't think of any way to accomplish this regardless, I'm still a rookie.

i'm on a Mac running BSD unix.
i have a script in which i ask the user to input the name of a mounted volume. i then call SED to substitute backslashes and spaces in place of the spaces. that looks like this:
echo "Enter the name of the volume"
read Volume
