What do you want to do with it?

Are you a programmer, systems administrator, database administrator, manager, consultant, salesman?

If they have "no experience" I would humbly suggest that they're a user, rather than any of the above. Smilie

Apropos the original question I would give a qualified recommendation to Teach Yourself UNIX in a Week by Dave Taylor Sams Publishing. It's old and huge, but it's also very inexpensive and does cover the basics.

Amazon.ca: Teach Yourself Unix in a Week: Books: Dave Taylor
