column searching in vi
is there any way i can limit the search command in vi to look only at specific columns (e. g., columns 1-10)?

I dont think it is possible. well maybe with a complicated regex search pattern, but I dont even want to attempt that. One solution might be:

cut -f1-10 <I>filename</I> | grep "your search"
# 3

Also worth considering using awk especially if you have delimiters - whether they are space, tab or other...

i.e.

awk -F, '{print $3}' your_filename | grep "your_string"

Where
-F, is the delimiter so for space would be -F" "
$3 is the column you want to look at

This will be better if you have variable length columns.
