Beginner Questions

Hi everyone. I guess I am the new guy, and also new to Unix. I purchased a box of computer supplies at an auction, and found an unopened box of Compaq Smartstart. So here is what I have... Smartstart 2.5, Netware, Windows NT, OS2 & Lan Server, SCO Open Server release, SCO Unixware 2, Oracle 7 for Netware/Windows NT & SmilieSCO Unix, and Netscape Commerce for Windows NT. I want to try it out, but I am not sure where to start. Are these good programs to learn with, or are they too outdated?

When Compaq sold Proliant servers in the 1994-1999 time frame, they included CD's for all of the different server operating systems. The smart start CD contains utilities for Compaq servers, and a menu driven install guide for each of the operating systems.
However, you must have an installation key (serial number, and activation key) in order to complete the installation, or you can only run it as a 60 day demo.
If you don't have a Proliant, then the smartstart CD is useless.
The other CD's may or may not install on non Compaq hardware.

Question PC or Server

The box came with all 15 Cd's and included the program licence diskette & the registration diskette, along with the Reg. code and all the paperwork. I was outbid on the server so I did not get it. I have been watching ebay for an inexpensive server to play around with, but have not obtained one as of yet. Here is what I want to do...
I want to set up a server that I can use to run my own intranet on my home network, along with use for file and picture storage. I have several old PC's in storage, and thought I would try an install on an old AST or Packard Bell. Will that work, or should I purchase an older Compaq Proliant? Thank you.

I would go ahead and try the install on the older systems. It may not work, but there is little to lose (I assume that the older systems have no useful data on the drives). However, this stuff is all very old software and I would not be surprised if it fails with newer systems.
