UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi everyone, I am sort of new to shell scripting,

I have a bunch of files that begin with 'blah' and I want to rename those files with something different (renamedFile1, renamedFile2, renamedFileN). I don't want to go through each file and rename them with the mv command. Could I just use a for loop and iterate through them some way, renaming the files on the fly ?

-------------------------------

for i in blah1 blah2 blah3
do
j=1
mv $i renamedfile$j
j=`expr $j + 1`
done

Sorry Mate i think i a made a big mistake

The above script will rename the files as

renamedfiles1
renamedfiles1
renamedfiles1
renamedfiles1
and so on ......... because of a misplaced variable decalration.

Correction:

-----------------------------------------
j=1
for i in blah1 blah2 blah3
do
mv $i renamedfile$j
j=`expr $j + 1`
done
------------------------------------------

Yeah, i noticed. My main concern was setting up the for loop. That was the gist of my problems.
