A design plan for an operating system. There are many different OSes built on this plan, like Solaris, Linux, BSD... UNIX describes a standard operating system, standard by virtue of having documents that say what it should do and how it should work. These standards tell you what you can depend on being the same across UNIX operating systems. Not really. DOS is single-tasking, single-user, has no memory protection at all, has no support for networking, and can't stop you from doing anything you please with the hardware.

UNIXes are full-fledged multitasking, multi-user, protected-memory, timesharing operating systems with all the trimmings. Often you use them with a console; window managers for UNIX do exist, and you'll often find them full of console windows. A console's actually an indispensable tool when done right...

Well if you really really wanna learn I will reiterate it: get" UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD. We use it for corporative training and it is exceptionally deep and easy to follow.
