Delete Files from a date
I'm quite new to Unix but I want to delete some old backup files stored in a directory.

the backups are stored on a network storage device located at /mnt/terastation12/backup. I want to delete everything upto one month ago. would the following command in Unix Sun do that?

find /mnt/terastation12/backup -mtime +31 -exec rm {} \;

Yes: -mtime +31 means the last modification data of the file (ls -l default)is more than 31 * 24 hours ago. filetimes work in epoch seconds so it really is 24*86400 seconds or more.

The reason for the comment is: the filetime difference is based the current second of system time.

You might want to run this first.

find /mnt/terastation12/backup -mtime +31 -exec echo rm {} \;

just to confirm that your selection is correct.

Cheers, does the 'echo' command show what has been selected and then asks for confirmation?

What if I was to do '-exec rm -i {} \;'?

The echo is for your safety - it shows what will be deleted before it effectively is deleted.

rm -i will have EVERY single removal confirmed.
