Sometimes you want to put things that relate to interactivity and the terminal in the profile, and not in the rc file. I usually put them closer to the end, keeping sh stuff up front and ksh/bash stuff in the middle. If you test for a tty, and for ksh or bash not sh, you can make one script do all, and hard link them together.

I even got fussy and put a wrapper if in there to avoid redundant sourcing:
if [ "$(Z_PROFILED}" = "" ]
 export Z_PROFILED=true
