what do one mean when referring to 'platforms'?

what do one mean when referring to 'platforms'? (examples of platforms as listed below)

alpha
amd64
i386
ia64
pc98
sparc64

To quote Wikipedia, "In computing and technology, a platform refers to a framework on which applications may be run. See platform (computing). The term may occasionally refer to a platform game, a type of computer game." You can find more at Wikipedia's platform entry.

In your example, your list comprises a number or processor types ie. the set of hardware components that make up the computer
