help with awk script
Hi guys,
I've got a file with n number of columns and would need to print columns from column 2 until the end.
For example, my original file would be
Code:
A B C D
A B C D
A B C D
A B C D

and my new file would be
Code:
B C D
B C D
B C D
B C D

I've tried an awk script:

Code:
awk '{for(i=2;i<=NF;++i); print $i}' oldfile > newfile

but the outcome looks like this:
Code:
B
C
D
B
C
D
B
C
D

can anyone help me to make it print the 3 columns on one line, please?

Try this:

Code:
cut -d\  -f2- infile

If you insist on using awk:

Code:
awk '{ print substr($0, index($0, $2)) }' infile

If that doesn't work (for example if your first field or some part of it matches the second one):

Code:
awk '{
  for (i = 1; ++i <= NF;)
    printf "%s", ($i (i < NF ? OFS : RS))
  }' infile

# 3

unfortunately, cut didn't do anything... still had all 4 columns in my new file

your new awk script worked nicely, though :-)

Most probably your fields are tab separated:

Code:
cut -f2- infile

# 5
