the advantages of unix as opposed to what? are you talking server or desktop? the question is possibly the vaguest i have ever seen, more details will get you better answers.

As in are you looking to implement a Unix server but want to know the advantages of doing so?

That's now only the second-vaguest question we've ever heard. You've got a lot of choices.
  • Which UNIX? There's commercial UNIXes like Solaris, HPUX, AIX, and many others. There's also more open kinds, like netbsd. There's also popular UNIX-like systems which aren't technically UNIX but are close enough for most purposes, like Linux.
  • What hardware? Many of these require their own special kind of machine to run on, not a standard PC.
  • Who's going to be in charge of it? If they haven't used UNIX before, they'll have a lot of learning to do.
  • What do you want to do with it?
