getting the "lines" in between
If I have the lines

Code:
1
3
5
7
9

and I want to create the "missing" lines in between, by taking the average:

Code:
(line 1 + line 3 )/2
(line 3 + line 5 )/2
(line 5 + line 7 )/2
(line 7 + line 9 )/2

to have the final output:

2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9

How can I do that?

I think you mean:
Code:
(line 1 + line 2 )/2
(line 2 + line 3 )/2
(line 3 + line 4 )/2
(line 4 + line 5 )/2

Anyway try this:

awk 'NR==1{a=$1}NR>1{x=$1;$0=((a+$1)/2)"\n"$0;a=x}1' file
