Running UNIX on my PC....?
Firstly, this is my first post so a big hello to everyone.

I work in computer operations and have a very basic knowledge of UNIX that i'd like to expand greatly. I was wondering if it would be possible to run unix on a home PC so I can train myself in my own time. Ideally i would like to use Solaris. Does anyone know if this is possible and if yes how easy it would be to install?

Hello and welcome to the unix forums.

Regarding your query you can find lots of info
regarding *nix on pc's on the web.
Try google and that should get you
some results.
As far as solaris is concerned it
comes with a intel version that
can be installed on PC's.

Would the PC version be the one they describe as 'X86 Platform' on the download section of the Sun site..?

True if your pc is running on Intel x86 chip.

unfortunately not, i'm running an AMD athlon. Do you think this will be a problem?

Using an AMD is not a problem. I am running Red Hat on an AMD Athlon XP. Regarding your questions, see this link for additional information. ...and Welcome to the forum!

Oh I see, that would be Linux then. I do actually have some Solaris 8 discs which I would like to try on my PC. Would there be any major difference between running Redhat Linux, for example, and Solaris UNIX on my PC? Solaris is the platform used at my place of work so if possible I would like to specialise in this area (if it's possible to specialise!)

For the record, I don't intend to run a split partition with Windows - I just want my PC completely dedicated to UNIX.
