Question Use awk in a variable, not in a file...?

I know that sed can do this. Can also awk?
I mean instead of
Code:
awk '{ print $NF }' < filename

to use
Code:
awk '{ print $NF }' < $variable

Anything after "<" sign is shell's domain, so if it is working for you in sed, then it will work in AWK or any other tool expecting filename.
