Symbolic Links to a network drive ??

Hi, I'm running Mac OS 10.3 (I was going to post to the Apple section but there were very few posts there when I looked)... I mount a network volume at startup, and would like to create an alias or symbolic link to that network volume that is reachable/readable/writeable by users who connect to my machine from their home directory.

I can make links to other local parts of my machine no problem, by using the ln -s /orig/dir /new/dir command..

Is there something similar I can do for a networked volume ?
I tried the above command and it returned a file/dir not found type of error.

Any advice you gurus can offer would be extremely appreciated.

thanks Smilie

You should still post under the correct boards regardless of the amount of post count. It will still be visible by all members who log in.

Have you looked into using NFS (Network File System) for what your trying to accomplish?

NFS ??

Hi, yes, I had planned to post there, but the forum summary said there were about 135 posts in there, and when I opened the forum I only saw 2 !!! I'll post there in the future.

I don't know what NFS is.. Could you point me to a resource that could help me set this up on the mac. Note: I don't think I'll have so much control over the share that I'm trying to link to. That share is set up by the I/T dept. and may be either an smb or Appletalk share.

Can it still work ?

thanks Smilie

NFS Manager Free Trial.
Quote:
NFS Manager is a small tool for easy access to the NFS features of Mac OS X. As an operating system with a Unix core, Mac OS X is able to support the Network File System (NFS) protocol. NFS is the accepted industry standard for sharing files between Unix systems.

Although NFS is a built-in component of Mac OS X, users cannot access this feature without special knowledge and use of the command-line. NFS Manager solves this problem by providing an easy-to-use Aqua interface for the definition of NFS connections.
To understand NFS, do a search on google for NFS.
