You would have to pay to obtain UNIX.
If your are wanting *BSD or a Gnu/Linux distro, you can download these from the developers sites. Or use a site such as:

http://www.linuxiso.org
http://www.distrowatch.com/

If you have an external modem, you should have no problems using it with *BSD or Gnu/Linux. If it is a winmodem ( a modem which requires MS Windows drivers,) you may not have too much luck. But you can check for a possible driver at

Lightbulb KNOPPIX

hi. if you wanna take a first look into linux (it assembles on unix, like win2k was developed from win nt) I suggest you should take knoppix. it's for free(!) has a good support (no drivers needed!)and a big community.
also you have an user interface like windows, but you can also go to shell (this is like the real unix, in relation to windows it's like dos).

and the best(!), you haven't got to install anything or format your windows xp. it also detects lots of drives (f.i. your modem) automatically. just download via mirrors

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

because it's a bootable cd, so you can get into contact with unix,linux,shell-programming and so on....

" KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it. "

have fun...and nice try

by the way, next time pleaz be more specific in the topic of your thread...like "searching unix....." or so...
