Internet-"Notification"

Hello
simple question:
I want to run a script as soon as an internet connection is established. Is there an easy way to do this without checking every 10 seconds if there is/isn't a connection?
Thanks!
Alex

More specifics

Not clear from your initial note, but are you referring to a system management notification? In other words, you desire something to exist on one of your computer systems to let you know when someone is making an internet connection 'to it'? Or, are you referring to a notification when a connection is made 'from' the server? Or...?

I want that a script is run when an internet connection is established (on a normal pc). Like when you can run a script as soon as a device is plugged in thanks to udev, just that I need it for internet ^^ (Sorry if I'm not explaining it clear enough! Smilie)

Edit: the whole Idea was, that I wan't that my pc tries all the time to connect to a netwrok via an UMTS Stick and, when connected, run a script to notify my openvpn server so I can transfer some data/updates/etc...
Maybe it's easier to understand know what I was trying to ask^^

I found wicd, seems to be exactly what I need.
I should stop posting questions, I'm always finding the answer just after it >_>

Ok new problem:
the client can only be connected with UMTS. Wicd doesn't support UMTS and the only alternative I found is UMTSmon, which works fine, but can't run a script as soon as the connection is established...
How could I do that? (automatically run script as soon as connected)
thx in advance! Smilie
