Backup

I have an SGI m/c which i am trying to backup.
The m/c dosent have a tape drive So i am using the tape of a diff m/c
Now the prob is whenever i givve mt command on SGI
it says
permission denied
rsh: connection failed
<user>@<m/c>:/dev/rmt/0: I/O error

When givin the bru command also it gives
Load Volume 1 and enter device {default ...]

can someone tell me wat the prob is

Do a 'chmod a+x backupname'
this will allow all user to execute the backup..
