Question Awk question

Hi all,

I assume this question involves an answer with awk(?). I'm able to figure out how to extract a certain word if spaces are involved, but have been having difficulty figuring this scenario out:

Code:
VAR="dig +time=1 +tries=1 +short @10.10.10.10 any s.10.1.1.1.test.com.test.net"

May I ask how I would extract the 1st IP address (always after an @ sign, then before the following space--in this case: 10.10.10.10) to be assigned to $FIRSTIPADDR

Thank you so much,
cg

Try
Code:
FIRSTIPADDR=$(echo $VAR | awk '{sub("@","",$5);print $5}')
echo $FIRSTIPADDR

try:
Code:
FIRSTIPADDR=`echo $VAR | awk '{ print substr($5,2) }'`
echo $FIRSTIPADDR

Code:
$ echo $VAR | sed "s/.*@\([0-9]*\.[0-9]*\.[0-9]*\.[0-9]*\\).*/\1/"
10.10.10.10

Another variation:
Code:
FIRSTIPADDR=$(echo $VAR | awk -F'[ @]*' '{$0=$5}1')
echo $FIRSTIPADDR

or:
Code:
v=${VAR#*@}; FIRSTIPADDR=${v%% *}
echo $FIRSTIPADDR

Thanks everyone. Everyone definitely has been very helpful, and the multiple responses have been very good as these have taught me how to adapt to similar (but different) scenarios I've been wanting to also cover in this script.

Thanks again,
cg
