What is Unix?

Hello everyone

I am completely new to these forums and am a complete novice to Unix. I have been teaching myself C++ over the past four months and will be attending university next year for computer science. I noticed the word Unix in the course layout.
What is Unix? Can I get it free?

I saw the BSD version but I was wondering if I could buy the full version of Unix '03 somewhere? I am assuming Unix is an OS.

I would appreciate any information.

Thank you.

Good luck in your studies and it's great that you're teaching yourself C++.
Being able to teach yourself something is a valuable skill. In the FAQ thread of this forum there are many answers to questions you may have.
As to what UNIX is, you can go directly to a thread from Perderabo (don't worry, you'll get to know who he is if you stick around for a bit) <smile>.

Thank you for the kind reply. I feel like somewhat of an arse as I did not use the search engine. To be honest I hate search engines but it is perhaps because I am not patient with them.

The articles were very helpful.
Marz.

Still a couple questions remain. Is there one company who has the exclusive trademark rights to UNIX? Do they put out an official version of unix?

You can buy workstations with distros on ebay and such... Hp and SUN products are there avaliable.

Also, folks sell the distro CDs on ebay as well.

Wow thanks for that wealth of information. I am thinking of putting together a cheap computer with my spare ends. I want to start getting familiar with a UNIX environment and perhaps start some simple programming in UNIX.

I know BSD is free but what would you recommend that I put on it for a UNIX OS? I want to prepare for comp sci.

Could you give me a link to where I may download the OS?

Also when I go to these unix download sites and they talk about "a shell" what does that mean?

Thank you
Again, I greatly appreciate everyone's help.
