tar -xvf ArchiveFileName.tar -d /path/to/destination/directory/

Not involved with AIX but on the systems I use you could mount another filesystem to the destination address, extract to it, then unmount and put it where you need it to be.

Requires a couple of assumtions as to whether you have the hardware capability or if doing that would corrupt something else.

Don't forget to use the "t" switch to pax or tar first so you know what is going to happen. If necessary process every filename and check whether it will overwrite a file on your system. An unsolicited "tar" archive with absolute pathnames is very dangerous. Be careful.

I have recently built a new server and patched Soalris 10 up tp latest bundle etc... When I run a decompress using the format zcat fred.Z |tar -xvf - it runs at a very slow rate.
