sorry.. but I'm logged on as root from the server.. and when I do

#who

it gives me what I posted above..

I don't understand that. I just telneted to a 5.8 box, became root and typed "who". And I get a useful display.

You're not still confused by my post are you? "who -R" works on hp-ux while "who" works on SunOS.

If it still fails for you, your root environment may have redefined "who" to be something else. Try
/usr/bin/who
