It works but for handling it would be nice if there is a way to input the vertical line numbers via command line.
Otherwise i have to write (i != 1 && i !=2 && i !=3 && i !=17 ....... up to 70.000)

To keep it simple, one can try this...
If there are 10 columns, this will delete the 4th column.

Code:
 
cat input.txt | cut -c 1-3,5-10 > output.txt

# 10

Is it also possible to give cut the vertical lines to delete.
For Example:

to delete the 4th column?

Cut command cuts vertically. When you wanted to delete a particular column, what I did was to cut all the other columns, except the one you wanted to delete and write it to a seperate file.
In a nutshell, i didnt delete the 4th column, i selected all the other columns and wrote it to a file.

Hi.

It might be an interesting task to write a short script that would transform a request to delete vertical slices of character and field positions into a call to command cut that would then perform the actual work by extracting everything except the items on the original call ... cheers, drl
