removing new line from the shell variable value
I have a small doubt that, how to chomp the new line from the bash shell variable value.

In perl, i will do chomp, but how to do it in bash -- shell programming.

When i redirect the date output i have a new line in it, which i would want to remove, how to do ?!

Yep, am not going to just use that variable only for echoing.

Actually i would want to use in sed substitution, so how to remove that new line from the variable itself is the question.

Can you tell me what is the problem in your sed substitution.

Here's whatever I tried.
Code:
$ cat a
ASCII text
Wed Oct  7 05:53:51 PDT 2009 Test
1
2
3
4

$ cat b.sh
#!/usr/bin/sh

b=`date -d @1254920031`
sed  "s/${b}//" a

$ sh b.sh
ASCII text
 Test
1
2
3
4

It doesn't need chomping. Your case might be different. If you give wider data, it would be better to give solution.

Yep, then it was my misunderstanding while reviewing that script.

Finally, i understood that date will not push newline. Thanks for all your response.

If your echo don't support -n option use printf.
