Tar argument -

Hi,

One of the senior systems administrators gave me this piece of code to use:
ssh -c blowfish SOURCEHOST "cd /exportN ; tar cf - sourcedir" | tar xf -

He says that the - argument in the second tar statements means use the stdin....is this the case? I suspect we need the - otherwise the pipe will not work right?

If the name of the tarfile is "-", tar writes to the standard output or reads from the standard input, whichever is appropriate.
