this is my home directory and that is a good question about duplicate file names... these were created from a script I ran and could not remove after script was completed (ran script multiple times before I saw this)

Code:
lpiva8026 $ls -l
total 5
-rwxr-xr-x 1 schroeks x_exp 768 Jul 21 13:16 cdrrd

What is the operating system? Could you post the output of ls -lb also?

I'd think about running fsck.

Actually, could you run an ls -li too?!

In addition to:

Code:
ls -lab

can you also run another way of seeing funny characters in filenames:

Code:
ls -lia | sed -n l

The "-i" switch to ls is so we can see the inode numbers.

And in case there are trailing spaces:

Code:
ls -1 | sed -e "s/ /SPACE/g"

Hi Methyl

We already established that there's no spaces (I thought there was at first).

What we didn't establish is the OS.

Also, if we could see the code that created the files, we might be more enlightened?
