correct file names are:

*_0.txt
*_1.txt

incorrect file names are:

*_12.txt
*_0123.txt
*_04321.txt

all files that are incorrect need to replace the ending with *_1.txt

therefore need to create a loop to find the wrong files in a dir ->that dont end in _1.txt or _0.txt and then modify the end of the files names to *_1.txt while retaning the orginal part of the filenames.

I don't really know what's allowable on the left, since all your examples are the same. If anything is allowable, then you could replace

with $1.

no the name at the beginning of the file should be the same....hence why i said

"while retaining the correct part of the file name"

..anyone else got ideas on how to run a loop checking for files with incorrect file name and correct only that portion?

Needs more and varied before and after examples.
