If you are looking for a distro to buy in a store (which is much easier to install) then you should go with SuSE. They have the best documentation. It's not just any old manual, it comes with 3 detailed books.

BTW, I use Slackware, and have since around 1992. I would not recommend Slackware to people not familar with UNIX or LINUX.

My first choice for a newbie would be Mandrake, but I've never tried Suse, so I can't comment if one is easier for newbies than the other.
